Dear Bookworm,
Quick question:
Is it normal to feel emotional while packing books into boxes?
Because I’m moving soon, and apparently I cannot take all my books with me. I thought I was being practical until I found myself holding a paperback from 2014 whispering, “We’ve been through so much together.”
Some books I haven’t opened in years, yet suddenly they all feel essential. Why do I own three copies of the same classic? Unknown. Why am I insisting I’ll reread that 900-page novel someday? Also unknown.
Sincerely,
Overattached to My Bookshelves
Dear Overattached,
Completely normal. You’re experiencing a classic literary farewell.
Books have a sneaky way of becoming more than paper and ink—they become memories, comfort, and proof of all the versions of ourselves who read them. Letting go of a few can feel surprisingly personal.
But think of it this way: passing books along means they get a second chapter with someone new. And the ones you keep? Those are your all-stars.
Whether you’re moving, downsizing, or starting fresh somewhere new, remember this: you don’t have to own every book to still be a book lover. The library is here whenever you need shelf space without the boxes.
Packed neatly with affection,
Dear Bookworm
